Abstract This paper argues for the interpretation of words on Basel BS 415 as markers not only song’s content, but equally its musical notation. Predating such notation, inscribed syllables reflect language’s priority over music, opposed to later reversal these priorities. On 415, written words’ orthography sufficed an indication syllables’ prosodic qualities that enabled accompaniment follow lead verbal rhythm and melody. As reform likely championed opposite, gradually gave way specialised signs notation account music was be frame within which sung language fitted. I will argue, conforms practice representing song through evidenced in metrical inscriptions archaic period.
